Purpose
To advocate, promote, and implement Lane’s sustainability core value.
Scope of Work
• Develop policies on sustainable practices.
• Develop a long-term plan for implementing sustainable practices at the college.
• Review implementation of sustainability policies.
• Develop Sustainability best practices, guidelines, and procedures for the college community.
• Recommend sustainable practices to the college President and to specific departments or
programs affected. Work with individual departments, staff members, student groups, or students to implement changes.
• Provide education on the benefits of sustainable practices.
• Communicate and promote sustainable efforts to the campus population.
• Provide training sessions and/or information sharing forums to promote involvement and
participation in sustainability.
• Increase, improve, and expand recycling at Lane.
• Determine ways in which the college can reduce its impact on the environment, that include:
o cost effective methods for conserving resources
o cost effective methods for reducing waste and pollution
o cost effective demolition, construction, and maintenance guidelines, specifications,
and standards to support renewal and deferred maintenance investments.
o cost effective purchasing alternatives for commodities, equipment, furnishings, and
vehicles.
• Develop funding strategies for projects and programs.
• Provide student involvement opportunities in sustainability programs and projects.
• Provide an annual report to the college community on progress toward sustainability goals
that includes benefits and cost analyses.
Membership is open and is based on interest, expertise, and a commitment to work toward more sustainable practices at the college.
The membership goal is to have a representative balance of managers, faculty, staff, and students from a variety of departments.

Lane Community College has the Institute for Sustainable Practices (ISP)
The ISP is responsible for education for sustainability projects includes working with faculty across the college to infuse sustainability into all curriculum and offering workshops, training, and conferences for students, employees, and the community

The institution's Climate Action Plan was updated and published version 2.0 in January 2019. The campus-wide Sustainability Committee was reestablished and has been active since January 2018. LCC's main campus accomplished Bee Campus USA certification in 2019. This work is on-going with a campus-wide Bee Campus USA Committee. A complete estimation of the financial cost for implementation of the CAP 2.0 was presented to the Board of Education in 2018.
Lane Community College is currenlty developing the Climate Action Plan update to version 3.0. The College obtained pro-bono assistance from Second Nature's accelaration fund to review our Climate Action Plan in 2023.
Lane Community College obtained a grant from the Oregon Department of Energy (ODOE) in 2022 for Renewable Energy Planning for $100,000. A complete feasiblity report was produced as part of this grant process.

Develop and execute sustainability goals, objectives, long-range plans, operating policies and procedures. Direct Property Coordinator in implementing procedures to accomplish waste reduction goals. Direct Energy and Indoor Environmental Quality Analyst in implementing energy conservation goals. Manage the sustainability program budget, to include capital expenditure planning. Evaluate sustainability program progress with the annual indicator reports. Perform cost-benefit and payback analyses for program activities. Develop programs and processes to improve college indoor air quality. Respond to IEQ concerns, investigate, conduct tests, coordinate trades to assist in recommendations for the remediation, corrections and/or to hire consultants to conduct additional investigations.Coordinate the implementation of the college’s American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment. Ensure compliance with Oregon Department of Environmental Quality regulations regarding hazardous materials disposal. Administer hazardous material disposal contracts: Inventory material, develop RFQ, Obtain bids. sorting, and organizing recycled and surplus materials, and coordinating pick up
or transfer of materials.

(garbage, recycled materials, surplus property) at the college with the goal of
minimizing landfill deposits.
Identifies cost savings to departments and overall operational costs through
reusing, recycling, conservation and sustainable practices.
Investigates and locates recycling markets to maximize sustainability efforts and
revenue.
Creates promotional and educational programs including written announcements,
articles, newsletters, press releases, brochures, flyers, posters, presentations,
and events; Speaks to classes, department meetings, and administration

Ensure that students with specialized needs are supported and are working in a

Coordinate and promote student involvement in the Learning Garden Club, garden planning, garden projects, and work parties. Support students in becoming garden leaders. Promote the use of the Learning Garden in existing curriculum. Collaborate with instructors on planning and supervising class projects in the garden. Plan and oversee student volunteer work parties. Coordinate and supervise work study students and student interns. Maintain garden crops, composting systems, soil quality, greenhouse seeding schedule, irrigation, and infrastructure. Lead restoration work along riparian area surrounding the Learning Garden with assistance from students and interns. Create promotional and educational programs including written announcements, articles, press releases, newsletters, brochures, flyers, posters, presentations, events, tours, and workshops. Update website. Plan and execute promotional and educational activities. Facilitate and strengthen collaboration between the Learning Garden, the Culinary and Hospitality Management Program, and Conference and Culinary Services at Lane Community College. This collaboration includes the development and implementation of a plan for planting and harvesting fruits and vegetables in appropriate quantities and at the right times for college use.
