3 Senate Representation
3.1 During the first week of May, the Executive Committee shall deliver an e-mail notification to all Members advising them of the available Senator positions, including application instructions.
3.2 The Vice-President Student Issues, with the approval of the Executive Committee, shall recommend nine (9) Members as Senators, of whom: (a) at least one (1) must be a full-time undergraduate student from the Thunder Bay Campus;
(b) at least one (1) must be a full-time undergraduate student from the Orillia Campus; and (c) at least one (1) must be a full-time graduate student
4 Board of Governors Representation
4.1 By the third week of August, the President shall recommend to the Board of Directors one (1) Member who is to serve on the Board of Governors. Upon their ratification by the Board, the President, by the end of August, shall report the selected Member’s name to the University Secretariat.
Board of Governors By-Laws Article 6.a.(iii)
6 a. Election and Appointments: 8 (eight) of the not more than thirty (30) members on the Board of Governors, not more than twenty-five shall be elected or appointed by the Board. Of the elected or appointed
(iii). one (1) shall be a registered student, recommended by the Lakehead
University Student Union (LUSU) to serve as an internal Board
member for a one year term
Senate By-laws Article VI. (8.g): The senate shall be composed of (g) eight full-time students.
Senate By-laws Article VII - Eligibility for and Election to the Senate
10. Eight full-time students of the University shall be eligible for election to the Senate on the recommendation of the Lakehead University Student Union (LUSU) from among students at the Thunder Bay and Orillia Campuses and either the Lakehead University Student Union Vice-President Student Issues or one additional full-time student. At least one of these students shall be from the Orillia Campus. A student member of the Senate who is declared ineligible to continue at the University shall relingquish his or her seat, and shall be replaced following the process by which he or she was originally elected.

There is currently one student representative on the Board of Governors. For all student governance positions, elections and appointments are observed by the Lakehead University Student Union. Any full-time student is welcome to participate as a candidate for one or more governance positions.

As a member, the student has a the same privileges as any other member on the Board of Governors in regard to voting and power. Recently it was determined that the student representative does not have a conflict of interest when voting for tuition fees.
Board of Governors By-laws: Article 19. c. : Board members who are faculty, staff or students at Lakehead University may participate in the discussion and vote on matters relating generally to the administration of the University provided that their interest in such matters does not differ from the Board as a whole. All Board members may participate in the discussion and vote on matters relating to tuition.
In the 2013-2014 the Board of Governors made two action plans:

Staff can participate as an internal member of the Board of Governors, as well as on Standing Senate Committees.
Board of Governors By Laws:
Article 1. f. Internal member is a Board member who has a direct or indirect material relationship with the University in the past three years before the member’s appointment to the Board. Internal Board members are appointed to the Board in a non-representative capacity with respect to the criteria above, and include faculty, non-faculty staff, (including management, advisors, or administration) and students at the University.
Article 6. Election and Appointments:
a. Of the not more than thirty (30) members on the Board of Governors, not more than twenty-five shall be elected or appointed by the Board. Of the elected or appointed
(ii) one (1) shall be full-time non-faculty staff (excluding senior management staff or advisors who report directly to a Vice-President or the President), to serve as an internal Board member for a maximum of three years.

Faculty participate on the Board of Governors as well as the Senate and Senate committees.
Senate By-Laws Article VI. 8.: the senate shall be composed of: f) such other members of the teaching staff elected or appointed in such manner as the Senate may determine.
ARTICLE VII - ELIGIBILITY FOR AND ELECTION TO THE SENATE
9. Pursuant to Article VI (8.f):
a. Nine full-time faculty members shall be elected by full-time faculty, each for three years, with terms to be staggered so as to allow a turnover of three each year.(See Appendix A) b. The Academic Colleague to the COU will be elected by full-time faculty for a three year term, serving a maximum of two consecutive terms. If the Academic Colleague is elected to the COU Executive, he/she may be granted an additional 3 year appointment upon approval of Senate. Terms of Office for Academic Colleague and Alternate begin July 1st and end June 30th. It is expected that both the Academic Colleague and Alternate work together as a team
to ensure effective representation for Lakehead University at all COU meetings. (See Appendix B)
