A brief description of the institution’s efforts to support alternative fuel and power technology in its motorized fleet:
A conversation with Hugh Briggs of Lakehead University Physical Plant revealed that although currently the university does not own any alternatively powered vehicles, research has been done. He noted that every time a new vehicle needs to be purchased, he researches the best currently available alternative fuel technology in vehicles.
In his opinion, current electric and hybrid vehicles would not fare well in Thunder Bay’s cold climate, and would be unable to perform the tasks physical plant requires of their vehicles. Furthermore, in his analysis the benefits of hybrid and electric vehicles were outweighed by the cost of the vehicles. While Physical Plant doesn't purchase all vehicles at Lakehead, it’s likely that similar analysis has yielded the same result in other departments with vehicles across campus.
On a promising note, Hugh stated that as technology improves and costs are reduced, Lakehead University will likely invest in some alternatively fueled vehicles.
