A brief description of programs, policies, infrastructure investments, outreach efforts, and/or other factors that contributed to the diversion rate:
All the figures are approximate estimates. We are in process of formalizing the documentation of waste produced in different categories.
LUMS has ~3,000 full time equivalents on-campus (4000 FT+PT). Taking holidays into account, these can be rounded down to 2,700 for ~350 days per year. each individual produces ~2kg waste per day.
Organic waste from plants and trees is composted in two composting trenches and used to fertilize University grounds.
Organic waste from food services is recycled as food for ducks and peacocks.
Paper based waste is sold as an annual contract to a paper mill for recycling.
Plastic and other reusable waste is sold to another contract based on an annual estimate.
