Sustainability Interns & Fellows

A brief description of the student educators program (1st program):
The Lafayette College Sustainability Interns and Fellows, overseen by Samantha Smith and Melissa Adamson, serve as sustainability ambassadors on and off campus. These interns provide a presence through four main teams, Communications, Metrics, Outreach & Engagement, and Eco Reps Coordinators. Sustainability Staff encourage students, faculty, and staff to lead sustainable lifestyles, engage students about sustainability and environmentalism on campus via social media, RA programming, and personal connections, work in groups to complete self-designed sustainability projects for the campus, and coordinate and plan campus-wide initiatives & events (i.e. Earth Week, Campus Sustainability Month, Green Move Out, etc.) Here are a few examples of the programs and initiatives: Reusable Clamshell To-Go Container Promotion, Keynote Speakers, Communications Campaigns on Social Media, Pop-Up Thrift Stores, Programatic Metrics, Educational Programs, etc.

Training for Student Leaders On Campus

A brief description of the student educators program (2nd program):
At the beginning of the fall semester the Office of Sustainability provides a training for Orientation Leaders (LEOs) and Resident Advisors (RAs). The intention of this program is to train these leaders in our community about the sustainability programs, initiatives and lifestyle choices on campus so that they may relay these actions to their advisees (first year students or residence in their halls). RAs also undergo a second training in the spring semester.

Target audiences include first year students (for orientation leaders) and residences in their halls or greek houses (for RAs).

Eco Reps Leadership Program

A brief description of the student educators program (3rd program):
Eco Reps are peer-to-peer sustainability leaders in residence halls, greek houses and off-campus houses throughout campus. Eco Reps educate residents and help foster sustainable habits and life-long behavior change in Lafayette’s living communities that also contribute to our campus goals. Eco Reps are responsible for planning 3 engagement activities per semester, administering the Sustainable Living Certificate, and monitoring the building for facilities improvements (leaks, waste signage, water bottle refill stations, etc.).

Additional programs 

A brief description of all other student peer-to-peer sustainability outreach and education programs:
Previous to spring 2023, a Compost Team of students was hired for large scale events in which food waste could be collected and the attendees could be educated about waste on campus, such as Midnight Breakfast, Family Weekend, Reunion, etc. Beginning in the spring 2023, a permanent compost team was hired to be on-call for these events, and to begin instituting additional programming to prepare campus for a new compost vessel to be arriving in summer of 2023.
