Kyoto University established Working Group committee of STARS International Pilot to submit the report. The committee consists of sustainability-related staff and faculty of Agency for Health, Safety and Environment, Graduate School of Engineering, Graduate School of Global Environmental Studies, Unit for Studies on Connectivity of Hilltop, Human and Ocean and Environment Preservation Research Center. The working group decided to use a set of keywords as reference and for search for sustainability-focused or sustainability-related courses.

The Working Group of STARS International Pilot has examined course descriptions and identified courses which have more than two of the above-mentioned keyword issue/subject as "Sustainability-focused", and those which deal with one keywords issue/subject as an important component as "sustainability-related". The number of both sustainability focused/related courses and the total number of courses are based on the syllabus. Therefore, one course can be counted multiple times depending on the semester or the enrollment year/department.
