Second Point of Distinction

Name of a second highlighted sustainability program/initiative/accomplishment:
Food organics diversion

A brief description of the second program/initiative/accomplishment:
Knox continues to make great strides in our food organics recovery program, shifting the paradigm from waste to resource. Knox Students recover food, through Knox's Chapter of the Food Recovery Network (FRN), we have created a community scale composting program for the Knox community to participate in, and we collaborate with an industrial composting facility to manage all organic material (including BPI certified) compostables that are used on campus in our effort to eliminate disposables in Dining. Knox is working hard at food organics reduction and recovery. In addition to the of pounds that FRN recovers and donates to local organizations, each term they host a "weigh the waste" awareness campaign. Knox's cafeteria and snack bar use compostable serving ware that is collected, along with food waste, to compost at an industrial composting facility. Knox Farm manages all plant material produced on-site, closing the loop and working with waste as a resource, to make nutrient rich compost that is applied in the gardens for next year's harvest.
