Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Knox Bike Share Program

A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:

The Bike Shop has been in existence at Knox since 2014 and went through a significant decline during COVID-19, as the shop had to be closed and bikes and bike parts were stolen. During that time, we lost the continuity of student bike mechanics sharing skills and promoting a bike friendly culture on campus. When students returned to campus, we recruited new student bike mechanics to manage the bike shop and identified two students to serve as head mechanics. We reinstituted a paid bike mechanic internship for students to learn from their peers (the head mechanics) on how to lend out bikes for FREE and make minor repairs.  As these student bike mechanics became more adept, we began to open up the shop to the Knox community so that faculty and staff could also bring their bikes in for tune ups and repairs for FREE. This resource came at a time when the closest bike repair shop was almost an hour away.  Some faculty and staff members were so appreciative of the Bike Shop and its services that one faculty member offered  to host bike repair workshops and another staff member offered to lead community bike rides once a week, where bikes were reserved for community members to borrow on a short term basis for these community rides. As more people were interested in riding bikes for recreation and transportation, and we were still negotiating bike thefts in our community, the college invested in additional U locks for all students who had either borrowed bikes from the Bike Shop or brought their personal bikes to campus.
