Knox has a staff member actively participating in the Galesburg Heart & Soul initiative currently and since 2015. Heart & Soul is community development based on broad and deep participation from residents. The idea is to allow residents to determine what they value most about their town and then encourage them to actively participate in steering change that strengthens the cultural, social and economic vibrancy of the place.

Knox and Knox's President signed the Campus Compact‘s 30th anniversary Action Statement in 2015-16. This states: "We empower our students, faculty, staff, and community partners to co-create mutually respectful partnerships in pursuit of a just, equitable, and sustainable future for communities beyond the campus—nearby and around the world; We embrace our responsibilities as place based institutions, contributing to the health and strength of our communities—economically, socially, environmentally, educationally, and politically."
