Sustainability is woven broadly into curriculum and research at Kent State. Students can benefit from sustainability courses, majors and a minor, and many experiential learning and engagement opportunities. Programs include the Center for Ecology and Natural Resource Sustainability, the Master of Technology specialization in Sustainable Systems, College of Business Administration's Responsible Leadership Initiative, and the Environmental Science and Research Design Initiative.

LEED Buildings

A brief description of the second program/initiative/accomplishment:

Since the university made a commitment to LEED certification for new construction and major renovation, the Kent campus has 11 LEED ertified buildings, including the LEED Platinum certified John Elliot Center for Architecture and Environmental Design which won the 2020 USGBC Ohio Green Building Legacy Award.

Kent State Airport Sustainability Plan

A brief description of the third program/initiative/accomplishment:

The Kent State University Airport received an Honorable Mention at the Airports Going Green Awards for its Airport Sustainability Master Plan. The awards recognize people, programs and projects that are leading the industry toward a greener future. The conference provides a forum for the industry leaders in sustainability in aviation to get together to learn and exchange information.

“Kent State University receiving this certificate is important because it recognizes the value of our Sustainable Master Plan.” says David Poluga, Kent State University Airport manager, “as well as the University's leadership in the pursuit of sustainability within the aviation industry.”

The Kent State Airport participated in the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Sustainable Master Plan pilot program and from this was selected to receive funding from the FAA to continue planning for sustainability. The master plan is designed to make the airport more environmentally friendly, economically sound and as safe as possible.
