Green Zone: A Sustainability Living-Learning Community
Living-Learning Programs at Kent State University are on-campus housing-based communities of students living in the same building who share similar academic or special interests. Students, faculty and staff choose to participate in these groups with the intended purpose of enhancing and enriching in-class instruction with focused out-of-class learning experiences.
To make progress on sustainability and climate change, both personal commitment and systemic change are needed. Members of Green Zone: a Sustainability Community will learn and practice how to be more sustainable while forming strong interpersonal relationships with students across many majors. Communication and learning among a variety of disciplines will foster creativity and collaboration in seeking sustainable solutions. Monthly community experiences include professional development, volunteer opportunities, and hands-on learning opportunities connecting students to on- and off-campus sustainability resources. Students will explore sustainable living, seek tenable solutions advancing campus sustainability, and leave lasting positive impacts.

Kent State University's Alternative Spring Break trips expose students to social justice and cultural issues through direct service, community visits, reflection, and a variety of cultural activities. 8 trips were offered during 2018 Spring break including: WOMEN & CHILDREN, ADDRESSING THE OPIOID EPIDEMIC, INTERNATIONAL CULTURES, DISASTER RELIEF New Orleans, DISASTER RELIEF New York, POVERTY & POLICY, NICARAGUA: GLOBAL POVERTY, ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT, and ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION: Volunteer with the National Park Service! Lake Mead Recreation Area, just 45 minutes east of Las Vegas, provides an abundance of outdoor activities to all who visit. Learn about environmental justice, explore how climate change dramatically affects this region of the country, and participate in related service projects. For this outdoor program, lodging consists of tent camping within a campground and one evening spent camping in the backcountry.

Kent State Campus Kitchen
We are a student-run kitchen that utilizes food from dining services, local farmers, and grocers for hunger relief. The Campus Kitchen runs on donated food, shared kitchen space, and student volunteers who want to make a difference! By recovering food that otherwise would go to waste, the kitchen is able to prepare 300 nutritious meals each week for those struggling with food insecurity. Food is delivered to Kent Social Services, Center of Hope, Upper Room Ministries and Springtime of Hope. The Campus Kitchen engages with the community every Saturday at the Haymakers Farmers’ Market, as well as partners with the Nutrition Outreach program at Kent to provide nutrition education to children, youth, and senior adults.
