Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
GoSTEM Program for Girls and other "Kids on Campus" sustainability oriented programs
A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
Keene State College (KSC) takes a broad, holistic approach to sustainability similar to that which AASHE advocates. As such, KSC believes strongly in the importance of educating girls (UN Sustainable Development goals 4 & 5), especially in the sciences and sustainability. One long-standing program is the KSC GoSTEM program that is specifically designed for middle school girls. A GoSTEM for high school girls also is offered. These programs are offered every summer and are a key part of the College's engagement with the City of Keene and surrounding community where KSC is situated. The program is a signature program for KSC and part of the College's collaboration with Keene Housing, so that at risk or economically disadvantaged children have opportunities to participate in wide-ranging programs on campus. The GoSTEM program emphasizes the sciences, often with a focus on sustainability. For example, during the summer of 2018, GoSTEM participants made parts for and built small solar cars, which entailed making their own small solar panels from solar cells. In addition, they worked collaboratively as a team and built a solar powered phone charging station. The charging station remains in the TDS building on campus not only as a symbol of what young girls can accomplish together through scientific innovation, but also as a tool for renewable energy utilized by members of the community.
The Kids on Campus (see https://www.keene.edu/academics/conted/kids/) Program sponsors GoSTEM, and other sustainability focused summer camps like Nature Adventurers Pre-School Program (https://www.keene.edu/academics/conted/kids/preschool/); Nature's Classroom and Outdoor Detectives (https://www.keene.edu/academics/conted/kids/grades-1-2/); Wicked Weather (https://www.keene.edu/academics/conted/kids/grades-3-5/); and so much more.
