A brief description of how sustainability is included prominently in new student orientation :
Sustainability is always a component of the new student orientation at KSC. Each Fall, The Office of Sustainability and the Eco-Reps present a general overview of sustainability at KSC, including campus sustainability goals and practices. Additionally, the Eco-Reps conduct an interactive game/presentation with all incoming students, including transfer students, about how to correctly sort recyclables at KSC. In addition, blue bins for recycling are put in every residence hall room, with printed information about the recycling program, energy efficiency, and other sustainability measures. In Fall 2019, brochures about living sustainably while at KSC were distributed to each entering first-year student. Finally, all students participating in Orientation are asked to complete the Sustainability Pledge, which lists many ways that KSC community members can live more sustainably while at KSC. The Sustainability Pledge offers waste reduction and energy saving tips, provides suggestions of ways to get involved in and care for your local community, and when students complete it they are sent a copy of the pledge via email, to remind them of the sustainable practices that they committed to. Student Eco-Reps present educational material about sustainability in-person or by video in advance of the Pledge session.
Additionally, KSC takes a holistic view of sustainability, incorporating elements of human health and wellness. The KSC Wellness Center is heavily involved in the new student orientation process, and delivers a wide array of programming, ranging from bystander intervention training, alcohol and drug awareness, to being a safe and respectful community member, and more.
