A brief description of the methodology used to complete the course inventory :
After receiving AASHE STARS Reviewer comments, the KSC Sustainability Course inventory was revised to ensure that only courses addressing the interdependence of ecological and social/economic systems, and/or a major sustainability challenge were included. The first step was to carefully review the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the Earth Charter to create a clear list of sustainability challenges. The KSC Office of Sustainability staff use these frameworks to define sustainability and identify priorities. Developing a matrix was a helpful step in ensuring key words in the course descriptions lined up and/or specific sustainable development goals or Earth Charter principles were addressed. Where it was still unclear whether courses should be included, course syllabi were reviewed. This led to a better inventory that more clearly addresses sustainability.
The initial approach for compiling the inventory was also very thorough. The KSC Sustainability Associate reviewed all course descriptions offered at Keene State College from the keene.edu website and the online course catalogs for 2017-2020. Courses were identified based on AASHE's definition of sustainability (STARS Technical Manual 2.2).This approach enabled completion of a draft inventory that was reviewed by members of the Office of Sustainability staff, the Director of Campus Sustainability, and the KSC Program Manager for Academic Affairs.
