Name of the student educators program:
KSC Eco-Reps

Number of students served (i.e. directly targeted) by the program (headcount):

A brief description of the program, including examples of peer-to-peer outreach activities:

Eco-Reps are a student-led, peer-to-peer education program about sustainability. Eco-Reps conduct a range of outreach actions targeting all undergraduates through Dining Commons, Student Center, Residential Hall, Commencement, and classroom activities. Example activities include: Ban the Bottle campaign, food waste audits, trash/recycling audits, campus-wide trash clean ups, re-use room, residential hall programs (e.g., outreach posters, brochures, bulletin boards; RA/RD sponsored talks; dorm storms) and, many other outreach activities such as tabling at many high profile campus events.

A brief description of how the student educators are selected:

Students apply through the campus student employment system and are hired as either work study or student hourly. The Sustainability Office also engages the Eco-Reps in recruiting, and we reach out for nominations from staff and faculty from sustainability focused majors on campus. An application and interview process is followed. The Director of Sustainability and the Recycling Coordinator, with the returning Eco-reps, review the applications and determine the best candidates for the jobs.

A brief description of the formal training that the student educators receive to prepare them to conduct peer outreach:

The Director of Campus Sustainability, Recycling Coordinator, and an Eco-Reps Fellow, work closely with the Eco-Reps, providing guidance and oversight. There is also a peer leadership program where existing Eco-Reps train newcomers. Training covers content, leadership, and program implementation skills. An Eco-Reps manual provides background on all modules (a "how to" guide). Also materials are passed along from year to year. Eco-Reps meet with Sustainability Director and/or Recycling Coordinator weekly on average.

A brief description of the financial and/or administrative support the institution provides to the program (e.g. annual budget and/or faculty/staff coordination):

The Eco-Reps program is overseen by the Director of Campus Sustainability with assistance from the Campus Recycling Coordinator, and an Eco-Reps Fellow (typically a graduate student, or recent Master's/PhD graduate in Environmental Education or the equivalent). The College provides budget support for the program. The College also provides a work space and supplies.

ROCKS (Recycling on Campus Keene State)

Number of students served (i.e. directly targeted) by the program (2nd program):
2,389

A brief description of the program, including examples of peer-to-peer outreach activities (2nd program):

Students run the KSC Recycling Program. They conduct peer-to-peer education on what can be recycled through resident hall programs, tabling, and making signs and other outreach materials. Through their jobs collecting recycling from resident halls on a daily basis, they also provide informal education and modeling.

A brief description of how the student educators are selected (2nd program):

Students apply through the campus student employment system and are hired as either work study or student hourly. We also use word of mouth and direct recruitment from sustainability focused majors on campus. An application and interview process similar to that described for the Eco-Reps is followed.

A brief description of the formal training that the student educators receive to prepare them to conduct peer outreach (2nd program):

There are several formal training sessions at the beginning of every semester that students must attend. These are led by the Recycling Coordinator and the KSC Health and Safety Coordinator. Students learn safety skills, materials handling, as well as outreach and leadership skills. There is also a ROCKS employee manual the students must study.

A brief description of the financial and/or administrative support the institution provides to the program (e.g. annual budget and/or faculty/staff coordination) (2nd program):

The College funds a full-time Recycling Coordinator staff position that oversees the ROCKS program on a day-to-day basis. The Director of Campus Sustainability also has oversight. The Division of Finance and Planning provides resources to the Sustainability Office to fund the ROCKS program. Work space for the ROCKS students, as well as supplies, is provided by the College.
