A brief description of programs, policies, infrastructure investments, outreach efforts, and/or other factors that contributed to the diversion rate, including efforts made during the previous three years:
Office Clean-Out competition over spring break to encourage faculty and staff to purge papers from their offices; e-waste collection event for campus community; Recyclemania themed events focused on recycling.
We host a huge move-out collection event during which we save 4 tractor trailer loads of items from the landfill. These items are recycled, donated or sold to the campus community and incoming students.
Large move-in collection event to reduce contamination and increase cardboard recycling; massive collection of pumpkin guts during campus Pumpkin Lobotomy - guts for campus compost program; winter move-out collection for food/clothing donations; campus surplus program for surplus office and classroom furniture/items (not included in diversion rate); Reuse room and Office supply reuse room for still good reusable items; residential life mattresses are recycled or sent to countries experiencing natural or financial disasters;
The biggest increase in our diversion rate is a result of increased data collection. We are finding better ways to track and report our information, making our diversion rate more accurate.

A brief description of any pre-consumer food waste composting program employed by the institution:
Pre-consumer food waste is collected weekdays by the recycling program. It is mixed with leaves and other organic material by Grounds staff and used as a soil amendment on campus.
None
A brief description of any post-consumer food waste composting program employed by the institution:
The college piloted a post-consumer food waste project in July 2012. The pilot lasted 4 weeks and helped to identify areas for improvement. The recycling office, sustainability office and dining services have been working together since this pilot to improve the appropriate areas and to move forward with the project. I hope to report data on this next time!
