Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Sustainability AQIP

A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:

From 1999-2020, the Higher Learning Commission, JCCC's regional accreditor, offered Academic Quality Improvement Projects as pathways towards institutional accreditation. During the 2018-2019 academic year, JCCC developed and completed an AQIP focused on institution-wide sustainability.

After working with JCCC's Director for Assessment and Evaluation of Institutional Outcomes, Center for Sustainability staff met with JCCC's cabinet and described the project. Cabinet members identified employees in their report who should serve on the project, and members gathered for a series of group and one-on-one meetings with Center for Sustainability leaders to help each understand 1) how their units contributed to institutional sustainability successes and 2) what each unit would put in to place to advance sustainability work on campus.

AQIP participants identified a broad collection of likely advances, from simple changes in processes and procedures that were implemented quickly to long-term recommendations that will require a more gradual, long-term approach.

To our knowledge, this is the first time an associates degree granting institution has used campuswide sustainability work as a path toward institutional reaccreditation.
