Part 1. Hazardous waste minimization and disposal

Does the institution have strategies in place to safely dispose of all hazardous, special (e.g. coal ash), universal, and non-regulated chemical waste and seek to minimize the presence of these materials on campus?:
Yes

A brief description of steps taken to reduce hazardous, special (e.g. coal ash), universal, and non-regulated chemical waste:
As a small quantity generator of hazardous waste, we do not generate a lot of chemical waste. Our "General Stores" distributes small volumes of chemicals to the labs so that they do not have large containers of chemicals around in the labs. This reduces lab waste. It also minimizes any spills.

A brief description of how the institution safely disposes of hazardous, universal, and non-regulated chemical waste:
Hazardous waste is disposed of through a licensed hazardous waste facility. Universal wastes are recycled at a recycling facility. Non-regulated waste is disposed of through the sanitary sewer system or class D landfill.

A brief description of any significant hazardous material release incidents during the previous three years, including volume, impact and response/remediation:
We have not had a hazardous material release in the past 3 years.

A brief description of any inventory system employed by the institution to facilitate the reuse or redistribution of laboratory chemicals:
We use a software program from Chemical Safety Co, called Environmental Management Systems. We have every container of chemicals barcoded upon reception and we perform an inventory every year. Faculty are able to check with our manager of Central Scientific Stores and Laboratory Support for stock on site, if they only need a smidge of something, rather than buying another container. We have had that in place since we moved into the building in 2003.

Part 2. Electronic waste diversion

Does the institution have or participate in a program to responsibly recycle, reuse, and/or refurbish electronic waste generated by the institution?:
Yes

Does the institution have or participate in a program to responsibly recycle, reuse, and/or refurbish electronic waste generated by students?:
Yes

If yes to either of the above, provide:

A brief description of the electronic waste recycling program(s), including information about how electronic waste generated by the institution and/or students is recycled:
All electronic waste is inventoried and if needed, all data is removed. Any equipment that can be reused is donated to Classrooms to Corporations, a Cleveland non-profit that helps train and certify high school students in IT by refurbishing or reusing donated electronic equipment for schools and non-profits. Some of the ways our electronic equipment has been reused include:
Training Bellfaire students in computer repair
Computer labs at St. Martin de Portes and Cleveland Maritine Highschool
Providing laptops for those students in need of a device to participate in school during the pandemic

Any equipment that is not needed or usable by Classrooms to Corporations is sent to RET3 where it is refurbed, reused, resold, or recycled. RET3 is an R2 and RIOS certified recycler.

Is the institution’s electronic waste recycler certified under the e-Stewards and/or Responsible Recycling (R2) standards?:
Yes
