A brief description of the institution’s efforts to support alternative fuel and power technology in its motorized fleet:

Several initiatives are supporting alternative fuels at JMU:

1) Propane Program: Beginning with a partnership with Virginia Clean Cities in 2010, JMU has converted 33 vehicles to use propane and will continue to convert eligible vehicles as conversion kits become available.

2) Motor Pool: Fleet vehicles used to travel long distances are being switched to gas-hybrids and plug-in hybrids. EVs are being considered for vehicles that are used more locally.

Data source(s) and notes about the submission:

All data was obtained using AiM by Nate Brown, JMU Sustainability Analyst. Duane Swanson, Assistant Director of Support Services, confirmed that JMU does not currently lease vehicles.

There are 33 "Dual Fuel" vehicles in JMU's fleet. These are gasoline vehicles that have been modified to use both gasoline and liquid propane. Because this category is not included in STARS, the total number of campus vehicles does not equal the subtotal of the included fuel types.
