A brief description of the institution’s green event certification program:

The Greening Your Event Program, organized by the Institute for Stewardship of the Natural World, encourages and recognizes the sustainability efforts that many JMU event organizers make to improve campus sustainability performance and engage the broader community around sustainability challenges and solutions. Event organizers become a Greening Your Event Partner by completing the Greening Your Event checklist, which serves as both a green event planning guide and an application for the program. The checklist offers practices related to paper, nonessential items, catering, transportation, energy, and also encourages communication of efforts to attendees and stakeholders. Increasing recycling and composting and minimizing waste are addressed in the six categories of the checklist, thus, our certification program does address each of the six categories for which we selected "Yes" in the previous section. Participants must demonstrate efforts in four of the six categories. Participating units receive the Greening Your Event Partner logo to use as part of their event and communications. The most recent Greening Your Event Partners was the School of Integrated Sciences Senior Symposium, April 20, 2024. In addition to addressing the six areas above, the event organizers reduced the head count by 15% to reduce catering orders and minimize waste, and provided containers to distribute leftovers.
