A brief description of the employee educators program (1st program):
JMU Building Coordinators provide a vital link between the campus community and Facilities Management (FM). Building Coordinators serve as a liaison between the building occupants and FM staff. Building Coordinators communicate to building occupants primarily through email and at meetings, and there is significant interaction on an individual level.
Building Coordinators' sustainability-related responsibilities as listed in their handbook relate to sustainability topics such as hazardous materials and waste disposal, accessibility, recycling and waste management, pest management, and injuries. There are approximately 175 Building Coordinators. They receive training two times per year, and the training is scheduled for 3 hours per session.
As an example, in Spring Semester 2024, Risk Management conducted a training on safety and health for Building Coordinators, and participants were invited to sign up for the Safety Champion Series. This training aligns with STARS PA-15: Workplace Health and Safety. The Building Coordinator Handbook section on Recycling and Waste Management were expanded in early 2024, in alignment with STARS credit OP-18: Waste Minimization and Diversion. Additionally, the Institute for Stewardship of the Natural World's professional staff and student educators worked with Building Coordinators to replace missing recycling signs and correct incorrect recycling signs across campus in Academic Year 2023-24.
