An academic division is an administrative division of a college, university, or school faculty that is devoted to a subset of students (e.g., Undergraduate School) or a particular academic degree program or discipline (e.g., School of Architecture). Divisions may exist under other nomenclature and with coarser or finer divisions, depending upon each institution’s context. JMU department equivalents and colleges were established as consistent with 2018 methodology. The 20-21 Undergraduate [Course] Catalog was used to meet the STARS criteria of most recent data available.

A list of department-equivalents in the 2018 STARS report was established by Melissa Altman, ISNW, in collaboration with Ms. Kristi Shackelford, Assistant Vice Provost, Academic Policy and Curriculum Development, in 2017. To be designated a department-equivalent, a unit met at least two of these three criteria:(1) units that have separate promotion and tenure guidelines at the department-equivalent level as of February 2017 https://www.jmu.edu/academic-affairs/policies-and-reports/pnt-guidelines.shtml.(2) units that offer for-credit courses (per list of course identifiers provided by K. Shackelford’s office for course mapping in AC1)and (3) units that have faculty as represented in the University Faculty (p. 451-477) listing in the 2015-2016 catalog.

For this report, Essa Paterson, ISNW conducted the analysis. A list of units that were possible department equivalents was created, and it was determined which met two or three of the three above criteria. First, a list of academic units with separate promotion and tenure guidelines as of November 2021 was created using the promotion and tenure guidelines posted by JMU at https://www.jmu.edu/academic-affairs/policies-and-reports/pnt-guidelines.shtml. Next, a list of academic units that offer for-credit courses was created using the list of course identifiers provided by K. Shackelford for AC1. Then, a list of academic units was created that have faculty as represented in the University Faculty (p. 3129 - 3187) in the 2018-2019 catalog. The 2018-19 Undergraduate Catalog was used to correspond to the year used to create the course inventory in AC 1. Units were identified as department equivalents if they met at least two of the criteria.
