The university offers carpool permits to faculty, staff, and students. These permits are shared by two to three carpool participants and afford the same privileges as a conventional faculty/staff or commuter permit. Since the cost of a carpool permit is shared by the users, the cost to each carpool participant is reduced.
The Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan was structured around the 5E's promoted by the American Bicycle Institute. The Plan includes short-term, medium-term, and long-term infrastructure investments, and Educational and Encouragement programs. The Plan was developed in 2014 and since then the University has invested more than $1.9 million in infrastructure.

We have a contract with Enterprise for vanpool. We also use Zimride for ridesharing which has been very successful. Currently we do not discount parking for these services, although we do have a parking discount for carpool.
Our transit system handles more than 2.4 million riders annually. The riders do not need to pay a fare or display an ID. However, the cost of transit is included in the student fees. We contract with the City of Harrisonburg for our transit services and therefore are the recipients of the FTA and VA Commonwealth subsidies.
The university offers remote parking to faculty, staff and students at one-third the cost of a conventional faculty/staff or student permit. The remote permits give access to a single parking lot on the periphery of the campus that includes convenient access to a nearby bus stop.
The institution offers a telecommuting policy and where possible, employees engage in telecommuting. The policy may be found here:

The institution offers a policy that includes a variety of alternative work scheduling options. Employees take advantage of this policy whenever possible. Summer hours are abbreviated and many employees condense their hours and work four 10-hour days vs. five 8-hour days during summer months.

According to Yates: Zipcar suspended service at JMU in the summer of 2020 due to the pandemic. We inquired before the start of the 2021-2022 academic year about Zipcar’s return and they indicated they are, “taking a very cautious approach to reopening University programs at the moment.”
