A brief description of the methodology the institution followed to complete the research inventory:

The total number of employees that conduct research only includes those in academic department equivalents.

Ben Delp, Director of Research Development and Promotion, provided the number of employees that conduct research based on "the number of full-time [instructional] faculty at JMU, as research is a component of annual evaluations and departmental expectations at JMU." As for part-time instructional faculty, the vast majority of part-time faculty were hired for adjunct teaching purposes and are not involved in research. February 2021. Source for number of full-time instructional faculty in 2018: https://www.jmu.edu/oir/oir-research/statsum/2018-19/T4-1_2018.pdf. Accessed November 2021.

Essa Paterson, ISNW, reviewed and updated the research inventory submitted to STARS in December 2018. New entries were made based on review of online profiles for faculty hired since 2016, published scholarly work, proposals provided by sponsored programs office, academic unit reports from deans, sustainability programs identified by the Office of Engagement, PRME report from the College of Business, and a list of university accomplishments. Similarly, faculty no longer at JMU were removed from the list. All faculty identified were contacted to confirm that their research met the AASHE STARS definition of sustainability research, and to confirm that they would be listed. Faculty were not included if they did not believe their research met the criteria, they requested not to be included, or they did not meet full-time instructional faculty classification. The full-time instructional faculty classification was used to be consistent with the methodology for the total number of faculty who conduct research. Faculty were identified as being full-time instructional faculty using a publicly released database of salaries and classifications for full-time JMU employees. A draft of the research inventory was posted on the ISNW website and a link sent to all faculty included on the inventory for their review. Edits were made according to feedback from faculty.

The credit was sent to Keith Holland for review.
