A brief description of the institution’s sustainability partnerships with the local community:
In 2010, JMU partnered with DCR, City of Harrisonburg, Shenandoah Valley Soil and Water Conservation District, Eastern Mennonite University, Harrisonburg Redevelopment and Housing Authority, and Virginia DEQ on a grant application to the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. After the completion of stream restoration projects in 2012, JMU continues to work with partners to develop grant projects and work with volunteer groups on Clean-Up days, such as Blacks Run at the city of Harrisonburg, in which JMU student groups help to collect 2.3 tons of trash from streams. JMU is also in discussion with the Central Shenandoah Planning District Commission (CSPDC) and other MS4 permittees, to formalize a partnership that will bring a regional approach to stormwater approaches.
