The Institute for Stewardship of the Natural World (ISNW) Committees are described in PAE-1: Sustainability Coordination. Members are nominated by faculty or staff and become members by presidential appointment.

A brief description of the formal training that the employee educators receive (1st program):
Members of the committees attend an all-committee meeting on at least an annual basis where they receive briefings on campus sustainability initiatives and progress from experts in a specific area, such as transportation transformations, waste minimization initiatives, and stormwater management projects. Committee members serve as ambassadors for campus sustainability initiatives and promote the initiatives to their peers. At this time, a tool is not in place to quantify the number of employees served by the committees.

The staff of the Office of Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability (OESS) assist committees in planning and execution of activities, as well as providing information and resources to the committees. In addition, promotional materials and other supplies are provided to support committee programs. OESS staff attend committee meetings.

The Conservation Committee is one of the ISNW Committees. Committe members were moved from a "conservation conversations" group that received training credit to a formal committee by presidential appointment. Many committee members serve as building coordinators in addition to the primary responsibilities of their position.

A brief description of the formal training that the employee educators receive (2nd program):
Committee members participate in sessions at least twice a year to update them on the most current sustainability and environmental stewardship initiatives at the university. In addition to details about the university activities, the meetings include background information on the best practices and current research that led to these university practices. The committee implements outreach and education activities for employees. An example is piloting the campus Recycling/Waste Minimization signage. The number of employees served by the program is based on the number of employees some committee members reported they reached.

The staff of the Office of Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability plan and execute the Conservation Committee meetings in cooperation with JMU staff members. In addition, promotional materials (such as signage for waste minimization) and other supplies are provided to support committee programs.
