The charter or mission statement of the committee or a brief description of the committee's purview and activities :
All divisions of James Madison University (JMU) are charged with a responsibility for environmental stewardship via JMU’s 18th defining characteristic (adopted in 2009): “The university will be an environmentally literate community whose members think critically and act, individually and collectively, as model stewards of the natural world.” The initiative grew out of strong faculty and student interest that was recognized by senior leadership and empowered first as an academic committee (in 2006), then as a cross-university President’s Commission (in 2007), and finally as a Presidential priority. Faculty, staff, students, and local government staff representatives serve on committees led by an Executive Council of senior administrators. Collectively, the committees are called the Institute for Stewardship of the Natural World (ISNW). One of the functions of the ISNW is to be ambassadors of campus sustainability initiatives and promote the initiatives to their peers.
