A brief description of the institution's stormwater management initiatives:
The University is implementing a comprehensive stormwater management program that addresses stormwater runoff from both ongoing campus operations and new development projects. These initiatives include, but are not limited to, a storm drain marking campaign, a nutrient management plan, employee training on stormwater pollution prevention, and construction site erosion control inspections. The University also obtained grant funding from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation in 2009 to install a bioretention filter and complete two restoration projects on campus totaling 3000 linear feet. Additionally, the University is in the process of developing a comprehensive stormwater management master plan to help guide future stormwater improvement projects. An annual report summarizing these various actions may be viewed on the JMU Stormwater website.

A demonstration green roof was installed on the Warren-Taylor Hall patio in 2006 using grants funds and includes educational signage explaining the benefits of a green roof. Additionally, a 4500 square foot green roof was installed on the newly completed Bioscience Building on the ISAT campus.

Two small demonstration areas of porous paving have been installed on campus. The performance of these areas is being monitored to determine if future installations of porous pavement will be feasible on campus.

Approximately 51 acres of drainage area from the CISAT campus is treated through two regional retention ponds. The ponds were recently renovated and now include a 15 foot riparian buffer of native grass and wildflowers.

The University has implemented the use of stone swales across campus to convey stormwater in areas that would otherwise be susceptible to erosion. Examples include the stone swale adjacent to the Duke Drive Bioretention Filter or various areas around Newman Lake.

There are a number of vegetated swales on campus that convey stormwater runoff. Several of these swales serve as filter strips for bioretention filters on campus.
