Within the past year, JMU has installed two renewable energy generating devices: a 10 KW solar-electric (photovoltaic) plant and a 7.5 KW wind turbine. On top of producing renewable energy, JMU utilizes these devices as a teaching tool for students of JMU and surrounding Virginia schools.

JMU's power plant uses a B20 blend as a supplemental fuel to produce steam for campus. While not included and adjacent to campus, JMU also uses steam produced at the City of Harrisonburg's resource recovery facility (trash incinerator) for 27% (219462.5 MMBtu) of all energy consumed on campus.
