The Institute for Energy and Environmental Research at James Madison University builds on JMU's recognized leadership in the Commonwealth of Virginia for developing and implementing innovative alternative energy solutions and applied environmental research programs. In addition to working with faculty, staff and students at JMU, the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research (IEER), housed within the Office of the Vice Provost for Research and Public Service, facilitates strategic alliances with external partners to advance the university's research and service projects.

A brief description of the institution’s program(s) to encourage faculty research in sustainability:
Financial support has been provided to students and faculty for the last three years. Specifically, $65,000 for scholarly work on renewable energy and energy efficiency was provided to 15 projects which supported 16 faculty and 23 students. Projects were competitively selected based on proposal submissions from faculty members. All faculty were invited to apply and all those selected incorporated students in their projects. A federal grant, DE-EE000310, was the source of funds.
