A subcommittee of the JMU Institute for Stewardship of the Natural World created the instrument.

An assessment instrument was developed and first piloted in 2011. Instrument refinement is on-ongoing. Samples of incoming students are tested as part of JMU's formal assessment process. Some of these students will be tested again later to assess their progress toward the learning objectives.
