A brief description of the methodology the institution followed to complete the research inventory:
“Sustainability research” was defined as research that explores the concept of sustainability, the interdependence of human, environmental, and economic sectors, and/or addresses a global sustainability issue – per credit guidelines. Research was identified via faculty bio pages. If research concentration was not listed in faculty bio/CV, it was presumed to not include sustainability.
Only full-time Assistant Professors, Associate Professor and full Professors were included in both total faculty and “sustainability faculty” counts. We did not include part-time faculty, Clinical Professors, Instructors, Lecturers, staff, or instructors without rank in either head count. Graduate students were also not included.
It was presumed that all faculty were involved in research of some kind, including professors in writing, language, art techniques, theater arts, and filmmaking. We did not include professors in the School of Music in either headcount due to the ambiguity of research expectations in tenure decisions.
