There were 5,013 purchased commuter permits for the 2021-2022 academic year. Additionally, transportation services estimates and plans for 2.5 student commuters for each of the 797 pre-pay and metered spots on campus. Subtracting these 7,006 students from the total enrollment of 29,458 leaves 22,452 students who commute via bus, walking, cycling, or other self-propelled transportation.

There were 5,187 parking passes issued to general staff, residence hall staff, Ames laboratory staff, and medical staff during the 2021-22 academic year, approximately 69% of all employees. The remaining 31% of staff are served by the CyRide bus system, walking to campus, or self-propelled transportation.
