Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Plexiglass Reuse Program

A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:

At Iowa State University, hundreds of Plexiglass barriers were added to campus buildings as a safety precaution at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Although some barriers have remained in place to aid in building operations and traffic flow, the majority of Plexiglass barriers are coming down. Through a unique immersive education and research opportunity, industrial design students, in collaboration with university staff and the Iowa Department of Natural Resource’s Iowa Waste Exchange Program, proactive reuse solutions were developed, prototyped and refined - toward addressing beneficial use solutions.

Over the course of two academic years, industrial design students had the opportunity to define the future of Plexiglass waste at Iowa State University - and beyond... through a functional lens that also interwove environmental, economic and social sustainability within their concepts.

The consideration of and interest in reuse, has now established a plexiglass reuse collection program - overseen by Logistics and Support Services (LSS). As well as serving as a collection resource for unneeded Plexiglass barriers, LSS also serves as an supply source for campus reuse needs, related to operations and traffic flow, as well as student class projects, club initiatives and innovation research and development - including the Student Innovation Center Makerspaces.
