Students and faculty in the Apparel, Merchandising, and Design major, in collaboration with the ISU Compost Facility and Facilities Planning and Management, formalized a waste textile composting program during the last reporting period to keep waste textile scraps from being landfilled. The project stemmed from an undergraduate research project and has continued to evolve since its inception, through piloting and now into an ongoing textile waste diversion program. The program offers hands-on experience for students - who ensure the program's viability through collecting waste fabric scraps from textile laboratories, overseeing the quality control of shredding the waste textiles and readying them for transportation to the to the University compost facility. The program diverts an average of 125 pounds of waste cloth from being landfilled annually.
