The Senate Agriculture, Nutrition & Forestry committee held a hearing on rural development and energy programs for the 2018 farm bill. The first panel included testimony by several Agriculture Department officials who outlined agency efforts to provide broadband service to rural communities, improve the electric grid, and invest in renewable energy projects. The second panel included testimony by rural business stakeholders representing Kentucky, Kansas, Georgia, South Dakota, Iowa, and Michigan. Iowa was represented by Dr. Brent Shanks, Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering and Director of the NSF’s Engineering Research Center for Biorenewable Chemicals, who outlined top priorities for the farm bill and the importance of federal grants on rural development projects. https://www.c-span.org/video/?434805-1/hearing-focuses-rural-development-energy-programs
