Zero Waste Week Challenge

A brief description of the campaign, including how students and/or employees were engaged:

The Zero Waste Challenge is a campaign that target Iowa State University students, faculty, and staff. The campaign challenges participants to collect everything that is not recycled or composted and place it in a clear bag that is expected to be carried around throughout the duration of the challenge. The intent is to encourage the audit and reduction of waste across campus, as well as spark a conversation around the incredible amounts of trash that are sent to the land fills each year.


A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign:

Participants were prompted to sign up online if they planned on participating. Once the week was complete, participants were then asked to submit their results which included sending in a picture of their 1 gallon bag of waste collected that they did not recycle or compost.

Caught Green Handed

ISU students, staff, and faculty contribute to sustainability in many different ways! We've caught a handful of them GREEN HANDED - in other words, caught in the act of being sustainable! Tag your friends and share!


A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign (2nd campaign):

Caught Green Handed is a social media campaign designed to recognize students, faculty, and staff members who contribute to sustainability. Pictures were taken of individuals spontaneously being green and posted on the LiveGreen! website to raise awareness of our symposium event as well as promote others to live sustainability to see if we could catch them "green handed".

Sustainability Symposium
Iowa State University organizes an annual Symposium on Sustainability, which provides sustainability training and professional development to the entire university community, including staff. Coordinated by Iowa State University's Live Green! Initiative, the Symposium calls all students, faculty, and staff to action to be fully committed to and engaged in ensuring a sustainable future through their actions and decisions regarding the campus, its operations, and initiatives.
