Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Raised Garden Bed- Pilot Program
A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
The pilot program was developed through several initiatives from different representatives across campus including the GREENadiers (sustainability club), Facility Operations, Biology Department, and other stakeholders. The raised bed was designed and inspired by student research. The current purpose is to measure the engagement of student, campus, and community participation. One important development of this program was that an internship was created to allow a student to care for the garden bed as well as encourage participation across campus. Currently, there is a team that assists with garden maintenance known as "helpers." This team includes faculty, staff, students, and community members.
At this time, the produce is not available to dining services and to the community to consume. Students who volunteer have access to the product. We hope to make the food more readily available to others in the future.
The raised bed is located near the campus Faculty Operations building. The Operations building is not located where there is a lot of foot traffic by the campus community. The hope is, that once our program is more established our garden will be placed in a more visible and easily accessible area.
