Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Certified Sustainable Campus
A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
Recognized as a Certified Sustainable Campus, Gold Level, in 2019 by the Indiana Wildlife Federation. Certification was based on the sustainability program, initiatives on campus such as a new parking lot made with permeable surfaces and rain gardens stocked with native plants. Faculty and student research on pollinators and their relationship with native plants took place in the paring lot and on restored wetlands. Recognition was also based on the availability of composting options alongside their trash and recycling services. To complete certification, IU South Bend hosted the Northwest Happenings Conference where numerous groups working on conservation projects from Indiana's northwest came together to discuss environmental and conservation issues in their part of the state.
