A brief description of the graduate-level degree program:
Indiana University South Bend offers a sustainability track within its Masters of Liberal Studies program. The Graduate Certificate in Strategic Sustainability Leadership provides students with the training and credentials to work with business, not-for-profit, or governmental units to take advantage of the emerging green economy opportunities for innovation and efficiency offered by leveraging the triple-bottom-line of people, prosperity, and planet. Graduates learn to: practice transformative thinking to; become an effective change agent; identify and employ the literacies and concepts of sustainability; utilize interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary avenues for learning and application of knowledge of sustainability; demonstrate an ethical sensibility and capacity for empathy, holistic thinking, integration, and complexity by employing a systems approach; use the competencies of innovation and apply them in the use of sustainability as a platform for innovation; apply collaborative and leadership skills; and formulate and implement sustainability action plans and solutions in real-life settings and through civic engagement. The introductory course, Sustainability Strategies, focuses on learning communication skills, a sustainability framework and a range of implementation tools, and an applied knowledge of planning strategies. The capstone course further fosters leadership, teamwork, and networking skills through community engaged project based learning.
