A brief description of the carbon sinks, including vendor, project source, verification program and contract timeframes (as applicable):
IUPUI has composted pre-consumer food waste from dining services since 2016. The Campus Center kitchen sends compost to GreenCycle of Indiana and Tower Dining sends compost to Green with Indy. Food waste is composted off-site, then returned to campus to be used as a soil amendment in our campus gardens.

A brief description of when and why the GHG emissions baseline was adopted:
IUPUI conducted a GHG assessment in 2009; however, there were many assumptions made in that assessment. Going forward, FY2015 data will be the baseline for IUPUI as the process was more robust and utilizes the tools recommended by AASHE. Additionally, in 2018 we identified gaps in the data reported in 2016 - particularly in Scope 1 emissions from stationary combustion. When submitting our 2018 report, we included that data to increase the accuracy of our baseline.

A brief description of the institution’s GHG emissions reduction initiatives:
The IUPUI campus is committed to annually purchasing 10% of our total energy from renewable sources. We acquire renewable energy certificates from Indianapolis Power and Light, mostly coming from wind energy generated in northern Indiana.
In 2016, IUPUI launched a composting program. This program collects pre-consumer food waste from campus dining, as well as landscaping waste, to be composted locally. This organic material is picked up and composted off-site, then returned as mulch to be used as a soil amendment in our campus gardens. In 2020, we composted 103 tons of organic waste.
IUPUI Grounds is undergoing electrification efforts. In 2019, our campus invested in purchasing various all-electric power tools - including two tillers, nine leaf blowers, nine weed trimmers, five chainsaws, two pole saws two push mowers and ride mowers that forgo gasoline. The Grounds Team is committed to continuing electrification efforts, by replacing aged equipment with new all-electric tools. Most recently, the campus was awarded an Indiana Department of Environmental Management Grant, which will be used to purchase another electric lawn mower for the campus.
IUPUI is committed to meeting a campus-wide waste diversion goal of 40% by 2025. We are marching towards this goal through various initiatives, including ongoing recycling education efforts, a fully implemented deskside recycling program, pre-consumer food and landscape waste composting, food waste audits in campus dining, a newly launched clean plate challenge, and more.
The IUPUI Master Plan committed to building all new constructions to LEED Silver standards. This commitment was then strengthened by the IUPUI Bicentennial Strategic Plan, where the campus increased this goal to LEED Gold for all new construction.

In 2011, the Indiana Commission for Higher Education approved the initiation of Qualified Energy Savings Project at Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis. The primary objective of the Qualified Energy Savings Project (QESP) for IUPUI is to reduce energy costs by upgrading and/or replacing energy wasteful electrical and mechanical systems in four buildings as part of Phase 1. Secondary objectives of the project include reduction of maintenance costs of those systems and the decrease of water and sewer expenses. It is expected that most of the selected energy conservation measures will be related to the following systems: Lighting, Pump and fan drives – variable frequency drives (VFD’s, Electrical supply power factor corrections, Heating and cooling system improvements, Temperature control/energy management, Water use reduction strategies. Legislation allows for up to $15,000,000 of projects to be performed on each campus.
IUPUI Sustainability holds an annual Energy Challenge, a campus-wide initiative to reduce energy consumption on- and off-campus. This challenge typically runs for three weeks in the fall semester, and is almost entirely student driven with participation from Campus Facilities Services. In 2019, the Energy Challenge led to 27,286 kWh of energy savings.
