Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Electrification of Grounds Equipment at IUPUI

A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:

A successful Greening IUPUI Grant, led by an undergraduate sustainability student in partnership with the IUPUI Grounds team, has catalyzed a broader electrification effort of our campus grounds equipment.

In the spring of 2019, the successful grant application led to more than $12,000 being invested in the purchase of various all-electric power tools from Greenworks Tools. The arsenal of new electric equipment included two tillers, nine leaf blowers, nine weed trimmers, five chainsaws, two pole saws and two push mowers that forgo gasoline. Since their purchase, the IUPUI Grounds team has experienced the benefits first hand. Not only are the tools more cost effective, low maintenance, environmentally responsible, but also safer to use for the grounds team due to their lower vibration and noise levels.

The Grounds Team is committed to continuing these electrification efforts, by replacing aged equipment with new all-electric tools. Most recently, the campus was awarded an Indiana Department of Environmental Management Grant, which will be used to purchase another electric lawn mower for the campus. In the future, IUPUI Sustainability and the IUPUI Grounds Team plan to develop and launch a branding campaign that will help communicate these ongoing electrification efforts to the broader campus community.
