IU Global:
In December 2018, IU became a founding member of the U.S. chapter of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), an alliance of U.S. universities working together to create global sustainable societies.
Collaborations and the open exchange of ideas are the only way to make progress towards our common goals. This year, our international partners will hold parallel competitions with each institution choosing their own winners. Then we will come together for an online forum where all participants are invited to discuss their research and ideas. Selected winners of each institution will be asked to present their posters.
The global forum is scheduled for January 24, 2021 to collectively celebrate the International Day of Education.

2019-2020 IUPUI was awarded an Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) Pollution Prevention grant award for the support and analysis of electrification of our grounds fleet. We are testing the impact and benefits of the use of electric hand tools & mowers to our campus community and environment. We will be specifically tracking the following performance measures:
1) Greenhouse gas emissions of grounds equipment before and after implementation
2) Number of customer complaints regarding air quality before and after implementation, especially in buildings with fresh air intake
3) Cost comparison of fuel-powered vs electric-powered grounds equipment
4) Employee surveys and feedback; OSHA regulations; number of equipment-related
workers' compensation incidents

Busch Systems Recycling & Organics Pilot Research Project Grant - IUPUI was selected to participate in the Practice #1: Small trash / large recycling baskets in staff & faculty
workspaces - IUPUI was selected and received Busch Systems Bins to install, track & measure changes to waste recovery, contamination levels, and labor and cost savings. The results of the pilot projects will be published as case studies to help other schools make similar improvements.

The Campus Kitchen at IUPUI (CKIUPUI) submitted and was selected as the recipient of the 2018 Indianapolis Sustainability Awards, Outstanding Institution Advancing Sustainability. CKIUPUI student leaders aim to educate the campus and community on issues surrounding hunger and food insecurity in Indianapolis and research ways to make a difference. The student leaders learn to see wasted resources as a sustainable solution to community issues through a lean operating model; utilizing recovered food, existing university kitchen space after hours, and volunteers to assist in the preparation and serving of meals for those struggling with food insecurity. CKIUPUI is a great model of social, economic, and environmental entrepreneurship, where students learn to address social challenges through sustainable solutions.
