A brief description of the methodology the institution followed to complete the research inventory:

Primary Data Source originated from the IU Office of Research & Sponsored Program - Data & Reports - Institutional Proposal Reports submitted for FY19-20 which provides a complete list of all Research Proposals from 07/01/19 - 06/30/20 then did a Title search filtered based on Sustainability key Word/Term search and reviewed each for at least 2 areas of Sustainability Sphere; Environment, Economic, and Social impact to analyze the % of Sustainability Research to total Research activity for both total departments and total faculty based on proposal title/descriptions. Refer to Tab, SUST Spheres, for a complete list of Sustainability related proposals including Principle Investigator, Dept(Org) and Proposal Title. Individual Faculty PIs name/Dept/Title are listed in the research inventory file_see Tab "PI Detail_SUST Proposals". Total employee counts are summarized in tab, "PI summary" and Academic Department Summary_see Tab "Acad Dept Summary".

Grand Challenges at Indiana University
Disciplined. Collaborative. Solutions-focused. At Indiana University, we are harnessing the power of research to solve grand challenges facing Indiana and the world.
We define Grand Challenges as major, focused, and large-scale problems facing humanity that can be solved only by teams of dedicated researchers working across disciplines in collaboration with community partners. IU has three Grand Challenges initiatives in progress: Precision Health, Prepared for Environmental Change, and Responding to the Addictions Crisis.

Prepared for Environmental Change
Our second Grand Challenge, Prepared for Environmental Change, started in early 2017. A broad, bipartisan coalition of researchers, government and business leaders, and nonprofit and community organizations are joining together to help Indiana better prepare and plan for the environmental changes that are impacting the way we live, grow food, and conduct business.
