Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Commercial Food Compost Program

A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis partnered with Butler University on a food waste compost collection route, making it affordable to use a large waste hauler for compost collection. Both IUPUI and Butler leveraged our respective relationships with business, non-profit and government stakeholders to recruit other organizations to join and help create the economies of scale needed for a viable and affordable city-wide commercial composting service. Butler and IUPUI won the Kimberly-Clark Sustainable Campus Competition Live! grant to help expand the program, and the Indiana Recycling Coalition later leveraged this award to offer a Closed Loop Fund grant to provide educational resources and assistance with recruitment. There are now twelve Indianapolis institutions and businesses participating: IUPUI, Butler University, Ivy Tech Culinary College, Indy Zoo, Duos, Patachou Restaurants & Prep Kitchen, Sunking Brewery, Burger Fuel, Allison Transmission, Rolls Royce, Raytheon, and Roche Diagnostics. In the past year, IUPUI composted nearly 29 tons of food waste through this program.
