GO GREEN | GERMANY | Summer
The IUPUI School of Engineering and Technology is offering a 3 credit hour course titled GO GREEN, “Green Organizations: Global Responsibility for Economic and Environmental Necessity" over the summer. A portion of this three credit hour course will be taught at IUPUI prior to a one-week portion taught in Mannheim, Germany. The class will meet at IUPUI in July for a final discussion and closing. This course is open to all IUPUI students.
This interdisciplinary course emphasizes sustainability, globalization and German culture. In this context, sustainability refers to design, engineering, manufacturing, technology, and leadership processes implemented and maintained in industry and business for the purpose of being environmentally responsible, energy-efficient, cost-effective, and socially responsible. Students will visit industries, municipalities and universities such as Mercedes, Roche, MVV Energie, City of Mannheim, and the University of Kaiserslautern to see various innovative methods of technology, manufacturing, and engineering, as well as embedded sustainable practices. Germany is known for its innovative technology and engineering practices and their sustainable culture and business practices.
Location Details
Mannheim is unusual among German cities in that its central area is laid out in a grid pattern, much like many North American cities. Mannheim is situated on the right bank of the Rhine River and is a major inland port and an industrial center with an important trade in coal and iron. Mannheim is located about 2 1/2 hours north of the Black Forest.

Students will visit industries, municipalities and universities such as EDF Hydroelectric Power Station in Serre-Ponçon (largest Dam in Europe), Frioul Island (Organic Fish Farm), Solar Farm in Vinon-sur-Verdon, Vasarely Foundation in Aix-en-Provence, Polytech Marseille - Aix-Marseille Universite, etc. to see various innovative methods of technology, manufacturing, and engineering, as well as embedded sustainable practices.
This program is also open to IU staff, faculty, alumni, and community members if space is available
Location Details
France is the largest European country in terms of land area after Russia and Ukraine. Marseille is the oldest city in France, founded in 600 BC by the Greeks. The famous French fish soup, Bouillabaisee, originated in Marseille.
