IUPUI University Library Launches Seed Library

The IUPUI University Library (UL) Green Team led the development, funding and launch of a Seed Library - a new program allowing library patrons to "check out" seeds for their personal use.
In the spring of 2019, the UL Green Team successfully applied and received funding from a Greening IUPUI Grant to launch the Seed Library Program. The library debuted the seed library June 17, 2019 to an enthusiastic reception, with dozens of patrons taking advantage of free seed packets in the first few days. The initial launch made available seven, easy to grow non-GMO herb seed varieties: Bouquet dill, broadleaf sage, common chives, Emily basil, Giant of Italy parsley, Rosy rosemary or vulgare oregano.
"We want students to not only check out these seeds as an exploratory venture," explained Paul Moffett, access services librarian. "We want them to also learn about the process of growing plants, explore cooking with these things or just expose themselves to different tastes."
The program continued to grow into 2020, with the addition of Sunflowers, Cilantro, Tomatoes, Hot peppers, and Milkweed. Additionally, the University Library now offers mail delivery of seeds, as a means of addressing the COVID-19 pandemic.
