Office of Intercultural Literacy, Capacity and Engagement - Critical Conversations + Intergroup Dialogue
A brief description of the employee educators program (1st program):
The Office of Intercultural Literacy, Capacity and Engagement (ILCE) provides resources for faculty, staff, and community partners to support excellence in scholarship, teaching and engagement with diversity, equity, and inclusion.
The ILCE offers a few peer-to-peer programs on these topics:
(1) Critical Conversations
- A space for informal, unfussy, intellectual, peer-to-peer dialogue
- Helps faculty, staff, and students recognize and address implicit bias to enhance diversity and inclusion on campus.
- Explore how implicit bias impacts institutions of higher education in regards to recruitment, work, student outcomes, and relationships.
- Help inform perceptions about implicit bias and future actions to support a welcoming, inclusive community at IUPUI.
The ILCE Office sponsors monthly Critical Conversations where participants can engage in a timely issue over the lunch hour. These Critical Conversations provide informal collegial space to dialogue about issues of social justice, equity, and inclusion and are open to IUPUI faculty, staff, students, and the Indianapolis community. Est 25 participants/monthly 1 hr session

(2) Intergroup Dialogue
Intergroup Dialogue is a facilitated peer-to-peer conversation platform between individuals from two or more social identity groups that have a history of conflict or potential conflict. It is a sustained communication process involving a series of meetings and emphasizing issues related to social justice, social group membership, identity, and the positionality (privilege and oppression) of groups. A dialogue typically involves 15-20 participants whose social identity provides general parity between the two groups represented (e.g., women & men; people of color & white people; LGBT persons & heterosexuals, etc.).

In 2018, Intergroup Dialogue launched the first undergraduate certificate in intergroup dialogue at a college or university in Indiana. The certificate enables students to receive academic credit for learning transferable skills in intercultural communication, conflict resolution, civil discourse and leadership, and it serves IUPUI's strategic plan goal to promote an inclusive campus culture. Upon completion of the certificate program, students will be able to demonstrate leadership capabilities to support others through intergroup conflicts and to help them better function as teams, corporate citizens and community members.

3) Creating Racially Inclusive Classrooms
The White Racial Literacy Project presents this yearlong, monthly interactive faculty webinar, featuring Dr. Kathy Obear of the Center for Transformation and Change. Faculty enrolled in this workshop will take part in an experience that will change the way they see the classroom, understand how whiteness shows up in the classroom and curriculum, and learn skills to ensure all students are included in and have the opportunity to learn from the courses they teach. The yearlong workshop includes reviewing 30-minute informational recordings Dr. Obear makes specifically for IUPUI prior to virtual in- person sessions with Dr. Obear to unpack the information shared in the recordings, group work and discussions. In addition, faculty will take “deep dives” into subjects on alternating months in preparation for the next 30-minute recorded and virtual in-person sessions with Dr. Obear. Sessions meet monthly: September 11, October 9, November 13, December 11, February 12, March 12, April 9, May 14.

4) Implicit Bias Workshops
In response to multiple requests, the Division of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion is offering Implicit Bias Workshops with facilitation provided by the Peace Learning Center, the same agency that provided Executive Search Committee Implicit Bias Trainings for two years at IUPUI. Limited to 50 participants per workshop, these trainings will be highly interactive and require attendance at two, 90-minute webinars. Upon completion, those who attend the entirety of both workshops will receive a Certificate of Completion.

A brief description of the employee educators program’s target audience (1st program):
Housed in the Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) at IUPUI, the Office of Intercultural Literacy, Capacity and Engagement (ILCE) will coordinate personalized workshops, discussions and programming designed to provide the knowledge, skills and tools for individuals to work across differences. ILCE will facilitate collaboration with the professionals in all DEI units including Adaptive Educational Services, LGBTQ+ Center and Multicultural Center, all of which boast long-standing training programs.
Representatives, both on- and off-campus, desiring more in-depth discussions, trainings and workshops can work with the ILCE professionals to develop unique sessions designed to meet more specific needs.

University Library (UL) Green Team
A brief description of the employee educators program (2nd program):
University Library (UL) Green Team
The UL Green Team is comprised of a group of UL staff with an interest in making the library more sustainable and engaging their colleagues in the effort. The Green Team leads efforts and hosts regular programming for UL staff, including hosting and training the campus how to use the Seed Library, webinar on being more sustainable at work in UL, hosting the university's first Green Event Certified event (UL Org Week) and teaching attendees how to correctly compost, and others. The UL Green Team also has active representation in other university sustainability efforts, including Tree Campus USA programming.

The UL Faculty and staff are the primary targeted audience, but many of the sustainability programs and initiatives, such as the SEED Library, are presented to all users of the University Library; students, faculty and staff and even public users.

On June 17, University Library unveiled its seed library which was funded by a greening grant from the IUPUI Office of Sustainability. The grant money allowed the Library to purchase heirloom, open-pollinated, non-GMO seeds of seven herb varieties (Bouquet dill, Broadleaf sage, Common chives, Emily Basil, Giant of Italy parsley, Rosy rosemary, and Vulgare oregano), allowing users to obtain the seeds for free. Users include anyone with a Crimson Card; Indiana resident with an IU Libraries Borrower Card; or IUPUI University Library Borrower’s Card. Packets can be picked up at the Service & Information Desk on the 2nd floor.
Since June, seeds have been given out to nearly 150 people, with basil being the most popular. For more information, visit the Seed Library LibGuide.
