The institutional baseline was determined based on AASHE STARS criteria for best practices and availability of consistent data. Baseline is consistent with what we have used in prior STARS Reporting.

IU Environmental Health and Safety (IUEHS) is dedicated to preserving the health and safety of the university community and protecting the environment by promoting a culture of safety and by demonstrating professional excellence. IUEHS is dedicated to providing professional leadership in the evolution, development, implementation, and operation of comprehensive environmental health and safety programs to prevent injuries and illnesses and protect the environment. This will be achieved through quality customer service, research, application of best practices, technical assistance, and education.
EHS at IUPUI provides training, technical assistance, and numerous environmental health and safety services to the IUPUI community. EHS staff also functions as consultants to Deans, Directors, Chairpersons, and Administration.
IUEHS is a unit within Public Safety and Institutional Assurance (PSIA). IUEHS is responsible for the development, oversight, and management of EHS programs that provide safe and healthy conditions for work and study, protect the environment, and comply with applicable laws and regulations. IUEHS programs and policies can be found at https://protect.iu.edu/environmental-health/index.html. It is the responsibility of each employee to understand which policies apply to them. IUEHS programs include but are not limited to the following: • Hazard Communication and Chemical Safety • Biosafety Manual • Chemical Hygiene Plan • Hearing Conservation • Personal Protective Equipment • Portable Ladder Safety • Powered Industrial Trucks • Respiratory Protection • Anesthetic Gas Safety • Indoor Air Quality
• Biological Safety Inspection Program • Compressed Gas Cylinder Safety
Duties and responsibilities within IUEHS at IUPUI are organized into six main operational groups: Environmental Management, Occupational Health & Safety,
Asbestos Management, Laboratory Safety, Biological Safety, and Radiation Safety.
Online and classroom training sessions are provided to staff, faculty, and students to ensure that persons working on the IUPUI campus are given the knowledge and skills needed to reduce the risk of injury while performing work tasks and to meet regulatory requirements. EHS provides online training classes through the University ETraining system. E-Training is an online registration system for instructor-led classroom training as well as a delivery system for
online training.
