Support for Low-Income Students

Does the institution have policies and programs to make it accessible and affordable to low-income students?:
Yes

None
A brief description of any policies and programs to minimize the cost of attendance for low-income students:
According to the College Navigator, 89% of IUPUI’s full-time beginning undergraduate students received some type of financial aid in 2016-2017 with 41% of them receiving Pell Grants. 69% of all IUPUI undergraduates received grants or scholarships while 51% received federal student loans. As such, IUPUI recognizes the need to provide all the assistance it can in helping students with need overcome perceived and real hurdles in paying for their education. In an effort to encourage on-time graduation and decrease the cost of education, all IU campuses have moved to a Banded tuition rate, effective Fall 2016. Banded tuition is designed to help students graduate on time (in four years) and reduce the cost of their education. Undergraduate students enrolled at an Indiana University campus will pay one rate for their basic tuition when taking between 12 credits and 18 credits at one IU campus. https://affordability.iu.edu/banded-tuition/index.html Other Affordability Programs at IU: • MoneySmarts – a multifaceted financial literacy program established as part of an overall program to assist students to make informed financial management decisions and decrease overall student debt. https://moneysmarts.iu.edu/ • Free Course Guarantee - Indiana House Enrolled Act 1348-2013 provides a guarantee to students that if they follow their maps but are unable to enroll in a required course in a given semester, the institution must provide the course for free in a future semester unless they can provide the student with a revised degree map that still enables the student to graduate within four years. https://affordability.iu.edu/free-course/index.html Specifically for low-income students, IUPUI promotes several programs and fellowships to encourage underrepresented students to attend. The variety of cultures at the campus create a robust environment for all faculty, staff, and students. IUPUI also makes available international programs and opportunities to study and become involved with many different cultures. A brief description of the institution’s other policies or programs to make the institution accessible and affordable to low-income students:
IUPUI Transfer Central https://transfer.iupui.edu/ As an urban research institution, IUPUI is deeply committed to the educational success of all students. As part of this commitment, students who transfer to IUPUI will experience coordinated, holistic, and developmentally appropriate support as they transition into and through the university. As they pursue their degrees, they will be intentionally connected to high-quality curricular and cocurricular learning experiences and provided continuous access to support services. Their student experiences will be based on a theoretical framework that supports the unique needs of transfer students. These experiences will enhance their academic and social integration and commitment to attaining academic and career goals. • Four-year institution and community college applicants https://transfer.iupui.edu/admissions/four-year.html • Intercampus Transfer applicants from another IU campus https://transfer.iupui.edu/admissions/intercampus.html • Returning Adult applicants https://transfer.iupui.edu/admissions/adult.html and the Degree Completion Office https://complete.iupui.edu/resources/index.html • Military and veteran applicants https://transfer.iupui.edu/admissions/military.html • Passport – Ivy Tech Central Indiana transfers: https://passport.iupui.edu/ o IUPUI understands that even with the various types of scholarships and financial aid we help make available, some students will still find difficulty in funding their education. One approach we have taken is to establish a partnership with Ivy Tech Community College, Indiana’s community college system. This partnership was established over twenty years ago with a goal of providing the greatest possible access to post-secondary education by IUPUI becoming the first public senior institution in the state to accept transfer credit from Ivy Tech. This program has served as a model for the rest of the state’s senior institutions. Beyond expanding access and easing the student’s path to an eventual baccalaureate degree, the partnership also allows students to complete a significant portion of their studies at a lower cost due to the lower tuition rates charged by Ivy Tech. This means that students who need to borrow to pursue their studies can reduce any eventual loan debt they will incur. As part of the agreement, IUPUI and Ivy Tech have collaborated on helping students pursuing their degree at one institution use their aid while taking a course at the other, avoiding a barrier that many students otherwise would face in trying to take classes concurrently at both institutions. The Passport Financial Assistance Agreement is a coordinated effort between Ivy Tech Community College-Indianapolis Service Area and IUPUI that allows enrollment at both institutions to be considered for financial aid purposes. Reduced tuition for nonresidents: IUPUI participates in the Midwest Student Exchange Program (MSEP), a multistate tuition reciprocity program established by the Midwestern Higher Education Compact. Students who live in states that participate in MSEP can attend IUPUI and save over $50,000 in tuition across four years. This brings their tuition closer to our current in-state rate. The IUPUI SPAN Division https://span.iupui.edu/index.html SPAN provides the opportunity for motivated high school students to get started on their college education or to take courses that are not available at their local high schools. he SPAN Division offers six accelerated college immersion programs: • the Running Start Program for 9th and 10th grade high achieving students • the Upper Class Program for top-ranked, high achieving juniors and seniors • the CyberTEENs Program for students gifted in technology • the Computer Tech Scholars Program for high school students interested in CIT courses • the Take6 Program for high ability students who qualify for free or reduced lunch or 21st Century Scholars.
